WHAT IS MICRO-NEEDLING?

Microneedling , sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy or the “vampire facial” is a skin rejuvenation treatment using a device containing 12 very fine needles to administer controlled damage which naturally helps trigger collagen and elastin synthesis within the skin. Tiny channels are created in the skin while still keeping your epidermis intact. This controlled wounding process produces growth factors to help the body rebuild skin density and integrity.

You will see results that are similar to laser resurfacing, without the expense, pain, heat, or extended recovery time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DOES MICRO-NEEDLING WORK?

The device slides along the skin and penetrates upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 2mm to create tiny needle wounds. This signals the body to respond by producing collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.

CHOOSE MICRO-NEEDLING IF:

  • You want an alternative to laser treatments that work as well, but are less expensive and less painful, with reduced recovery time.
  • You have allergies or sensitivities to the ingredients of chemical peels
  • You are happy and patient with a “less is more” approach (you may need 4 or more treatments, depending on what you are treating)
  • You need results with reduced recovery time
  • You have melasma, which should not be treated with laser or IPL, or any devices that heat the skin.
  • You desire better visible improvement for specifically targeted areas of deeper wrinkles, pigmented spots, indented scars, or stretch marks.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY TREATMENT?

Any blood thinning agents should be avoided for 7 days prior to treatment.  This includes but is not limited to advil, aspirin, alcohol, fish oil, and certain medications.  If you are prescribed blood thinning medications, please consult your healthcare provider before discontinuing use.  If you’ve used blood thinning agents prior to treatment, your recovery may take longer than expected and may include more redness and the possibility of bruising.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR MICRO-NEEDLING?

Medical micro-needling is safe on all skin types and colors because the epidermis is not damaged during treatment. The chance of change in pigmentation or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation is minimal. Skin micro-needling can be used on sensitive and fragile areas (eyes, neck, back of hands) that cannot be treated easily with other procedures. Micro-needling is not suitable for patients who have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last three months, have open wounds, cuts or abrasions, have had radiation skin treatment within the last year, are suffering from any skin infection, condition, or herpes simplex in the area of concern, are pregnant or breast feeding, have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing.  Microneedling cannot be performed on areas with any stage of skin cancer.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Most people will notice redness and mild swelling similar to slight sunburn for 24-48 hours and there may be slight pinpoint bleeding and/or bruising. Skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two. Full results will take a few months to appear.

WHAT DOES THE MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT INVOLVE??

You should arrive to your microneedling appointment 15 minutes early to begin numbing.   You’re welcome to purchase a tube of Zensa 5% lidocaine numbing cream from our online shop prior to your appointment and apply it to yourself to speed things along.

After numbing, your skin will be cleansed and your microneedling treatment begins!  A small device (about the width of a sharpie marker) using a one-time use cartridge containing 12 very fine needles is glided across the skin.  The whole treatment takes around 20-30 minutes per area (face, neck, decolette and hands are individual areas).

DOES IT HURT?

Hear what Sarah has to say about Micro Needling

You may not believe it, but some people say it almost tickles!   The numbing cream is VERY effective.  For most people, directly over the jawbone, tip of the nose and upper lip can be the most uncomfortable areas to treat.   Overall, it just feels like a vibration.

WHAT IS THE DOWN TIME AFTER MIDRO-NEEDLING TREATMENT?

Inflammation of the skin is very temporary and reduces greatly within a few hours. It may remain slightly pink for up to 48 hours after treatment.  Skin may feel a bit more dry and some very light peeling can be expected for one week post treatment.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID ON MY SKIN AFTER TREATMENT?

AHA’s (glycolic Acid), retinol, acidic or “active” ingredients should not be used for 2-3 days after treatment to allow for maximum healing. Sun exposure is not recommended and sunscreen is encouraged for at least 7 days.  Sweating and swimming are also prohibited for 2-3 days after treatment.  Failure to follow aftercare instructions can possibly lead to scarring or hyperpigmentation.

CAN I MICRO NEEDLE IF I HAVE BOTOX OR FILLER?

Yes. Try to schedule your micro needling appointment just before your Botox or filler appointment and you’ll see some Wow! results after you’ve healed. If you already had an injection recently, you need to wait at least 48 hours after having Botox, and one week after a filler injection.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED AND HOW OFTEN CAN MICRO-NEEDLING PROCEDURES BE REPEATED?

Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks as needed. Collagen induction requires at least 3 treatments, while scar reduction requires between 3-6. The number of treatments needed depends on individual cases. Microneedling can be used on all parts of the body (neck, décolleté, arms, legs, etc). Usually results begin to appear after the first treatment.

HOW MUCH DOES THE TREATMENT COST?

This is discussed during a free consultation. A treatment is put together for each client, at which point cost is discussed. Treatment decisions are based on each patient’s individual needs and desired results.

MICRO-NEEDLING VS DERMA-ROLLING?

MICRO-NEEDLING

different areas of the face and body require different needle depths to safely and effectively treat the skin.  The device used at CrispyBrows allows needles to penetrate not only at different speeds, but can be adjusted to lengths up to 2mm.

the needles enter and exit the skin at the same perpendicular angle to the skin allowing for a clean enter/exit motion without causing unintended damage by tearing.

our device uses one-time use cartridges, ensuring sharp, sterile use each service.

DERMA-ROLLING

only has one depth of needle per roller

needles on a derma-roller enter and exit the skin on different     angles causing a “flick” upon exit, causing much more damage than is intended.

derma-rollers, especially for at-home use are nearly impossible to sterilize and certainly cannot remain sharp after repeated use.  This increases risk of infection and excessive trauma to the skin.
